About 900 years ago, a volcano erupted near today's Flagstaff, AZ. Because of the very dry climate, the lava flows and cinders around the volcano have not released their nutrients into the soil. So, plants and trees in the area have not reclaimed the land. We hiked all around the volcano and saw crusty lava flows and cinders from the blast. There were local tribes living in the region at the time of the eruption, and from stories passed down from generation to generation scientists have been able to re-create the pattern of eruptions in multimedia. The visitor center at the park provided great information on the eruptions and their effect on the surrounding landscape, people, and wildlife.
